Do you ever think about how 1 of the 1st waterbending moves that Katara learns, that she doesn’t come up with herself, is the water whip that she learns from that waterbending scroll, which also happens to be 1 of the final moves that she uses against Azula, using that move to manoeuvre Azula into a place more favourable for Katara??

image

Do you ever think about how in that same episode that Katara learns that, Sokka tries to steer a boat, and laments how he doesn’t know how, because that boat wasn’t made by The Southern Water Tribe, and then, later, steers an entire Fire Nation war balloon with precision and intent, and knows how to destroy them effectively and efficiently, while also being a co-inventor of the inspiration invention of those Fire Nation war balloons??

image

Do you ever think about how, when face-to-face with The Avatar in the Avatar State, after repeatedly threatening to imminently kill that Avatar like the other Air Nomads, Ozai’s 1st move is to firebend directly towards Aang’s left side of his face, the exact same spot that Zuko has his scar on??

image

Do you ever think about how Zuko was challenged to his 1st Angi Kai due to his desire to protect people being unnecessarily put in harms way, and his final Angi Kai was ended due to the same reason??

We can argue all day long about how Angel and/or Spike changed the vampire lore in BtVS. One had a soul forced on him, and the other chose to get one (after having a chip in his head for two years), but no one talks about my girl Harmony.

No soul, no chip, and she chooses to stop killing humans and drinking human blood for no other reason than a good pay check.

Harmony is such a fascinating case. She shows more empathy and genuine care for others AFTER being turned than she did before.

High school regular human Harmony was a garbage friend who turned on Cordy over nothing and took to humiliating her in front of everyone. And was a basic stereotypical high school mean girl bully.

Vampire Harmony seemed to genuinely miss and care for Cordy (even if she turned on her again, I think it was largely because she knew she wasn’t accepted into the group). She also seemed to genuinely care about Fred. We saw her mourning Fred alone when there was no one around to put on a show for. She was also genuinely empathetic to Wesley during that, she was upset about Gunn’s role in it, and she was angry at/hated Knox.

High school regular human Harmony that was alive with a soul would not have cared one bit about Fred’s death. She would have bullied the absolute shit out of Fred for being a nerd and then would have shrugged it off and forgotten about her if she was killed.

But soulless vampire Harmony gave Fred a chance, became friends with her, and was genuinely upset over her death.

Harmony is actually the most interesting vampire in the show.

I’m taking pottery lessons right now… and my teacher said “the kiln gods are being kind to me right now.” And that made me stop and think. Is there a god of pottery? I tried to look it up but it’s hazy.

In Ancient Greece, Athena was apparently the goddess of crafts, which is a bit vague. Hephaestus was the god of sculpting, but that’s not right either.

In Ancient Egypt, I found Khnum who made the other gods and humankind on his potter’s wheel.

I found two other gods of pottery in cultures I don’t know: Lianaotabi and Panthoibi.

But I wasn’t able to find anyone else. Pottery being such an important part of daily life all around the world, it seems like there would be more. Does anyone know of any other gods of pottery?

Edited: removed incorrect/inaccurate descriptor for Lianaotabi and Panthoibi peoples. Apologies, I found them through a random google search for “pottery gods.”

cutting child porn from ao3 is not going to be a ‘slippery slope’ to full blown ‘censorship’, you guys are just pedophiles

There is no child porn on AO3. That is a false statement perpetuated by pro censorship groups in order to promote their repressive goals.

Child pornography is pornographic material (images, videos etc) of actual children. That is why it is illegal to produce, transmit, or possess. Because it involves the sexual abuse, assault and exploitation of ACTUAL REAL CHILDREN.

AO3 is a US website that abides by US law. US law prohibits any involvement whatsoever with child porngraphy -  possession, creation, transmission etc. If there was child pornography on AO3 not only would the website be taken down but everyone involved would be in prison. This has not happened because there is no child pornography on the site.

There are some fictional stories on AO3 that include fictional sex scenes between fictional characters who are underage. But that is not child porgraphy and is legal. Just the way Game of Thrones has sex scenes involving underage characters but that’s legal because in real life the actors and actresses are all legal adults. It is legal because no actual children are harmed.

Actual children are harmed though when pro censorship people pull stunts like trying to report AO3 to the FBI for child pornography. While these complaints did not result in any actions against AO3 because there was no child pornography it means that time that could have been used to investigate real claims about real child pornography that put real children in harms way was wasted. And that hurts children.

But these people don’t care about children. They don’t even care about banning fictional subject matter that depicts underage sex. If they did they would be campaigning equally hard against HBO for airing Game of Thrones and George RR Martin for writing A Song of Ice and Fire both of which include underage sex scene as well as other dark subject material like rape. What they really care about it claiming the moral high ground to justify harassment campaigns and censorship of marginalized communities.

There are little romance subplots all around me irl and I don’t have the time to turn any of them into novels

Today I went to my favorite Italian restaurant and was seated at the table nearest the kitchen. We noticed a change to the menu. The list of pastas had been replaced by just “pasta of the day.” We asked what the pasta of the day was. The waiter told us it was a mystery. So we ordered it, and when it came it was pasta with eggs and bacon, and I was so surprised and delighted by this unexpected whimsy that I started to clap. And then I noticed the chef watching me from the doorway and smiling. He had clearly come out wanting to see what people’s reactions would be.

I’m not saying I love the chef or that the chef loves me. I am saying that is a seed with which to grow a romance that I don’t have time to write.

Romance seedling of the day:

Tonight I went to a party and a woman asked me my name.

“Anna,” I said.

“This confirms my theory,” she said loudly, to the entire room. People stopped to listen. “ALL Anna’s are drop dead gorgeous!”

I felt v flattered. I asked for her name.

She flashed me a grin. “Anna.”

Irl, do I love her and does she love me? No. But this is the seed of another romance book I don’t have the time to write.

I was miserable. At a parade! All of my friends were drunk and misbehaving and smelled of rancid tequila. I felt alone and about a million years old. The sun was glaring daggers into my eyeballs.

And then! At this parade! A very large beautiful man I didn’t know! Saw me squinting! Said, “I’m can block the sun for you” and stepped in front of me. My sun-blindness cleared into a vision of his gentle smile.

He was a mathematics professor! Very sober, soft-spoken, kind. Did not insult my drunk friends but also stood carefully apart from them. The perfect balance.

Do I love him? No. But he’s a romantic hero in a book somewhere in the multiverse.

#these are very good example of what just looking and watching can add to your writing#i do this - not always for romance purposes but i just PAY ATTENTION to the people around me#because ordinary people are interesting and everyone has their own story#and they can inspire you in ways you’d never come up with yourself

Yes! This was a post about getting into the writing mindset.

I wasn’t trying to share special memories or make a statement about the goodness of humanity (totally fine if that’s what you got from this!). But this is a tool any writer could add to their toolbox: finding tidbits from life not merely through neutral observation but by observing the world through the lens of your own writing philosophy.

I write romance books. The romance genre at its best gives every kind of person the opportunity to be the hero of their own story. For me, observing the world through my writing philosophy means acknowledging the heroism intrinsic in us all. Thinking: What if this person were the romantic hero? Why would someone fall in love with them? For folks writing different kinds of stories, the approach may differ, but it’ll still be creatively generative.
